Apple says Samsung 'blatantly imitated' their iPhone and iPad appearance. The Galaxy Tab 10 and recent Tab 7.1 and the two devices Apple claims too closely resemble the iPad, and the Samsung Galaxy S with the iPhone.

Apple has recently altered their complaint, now alleging copyright infringement. Lawsuits have been slapped onto Samsung Australia, Korea, United States and Europe.
Samsung has fired back claiming an infringements of their own, but rather on the technical side of the products.
Do you think Apple is taking this too far and possibly only threatened by Samsung's potentially 'better' products? Or does Apple have sufficient grounds to stand on?
Apple is taking it too far and they are seriously threatened. It's about time for me to get a tablet, but I refuse to buy an iPad. Yes, I know at this stage I need to get all my armour on because I will be seriously bashed in class on Tuesday, but after I bought my first iPod, I promised myself to never buy an Apple product again. Then the iPod broke, and what did I buy, another iPod, why, because I had all my music in iStupid format and the conversion would have taken too long and I just couldn't be bothered. One day when I finish my degree and feel like sitting by my PC for hours on end, I will fix this and buy something else. So, I was really looking forward to seeing your Galaxy Tab before the end of semester and now Apple is also preventing me from doing that. The Galaxy phones so far has been a great success and running on android makes it (in my view) a much better product than apple, blackberry (which I have), windows phone and especially Nokia OS (cant remember the name). So apple is threatened, if not directly, at least indirectly, if samsung picks up market share from all the other providers (except apple) it will mean that is market share that apple didn't pick up and this is what I mean by indirect threats. I also wouldn't be surprised if apple loses some market share to samsung.
ReplyDeleteOk, vented, I'm over it now!

It's an interesting battle. The lawyers would certainly be loving it... but I also wonder, are both companies keen to see this battle continue just for the publicity? It does say something about the strength of the APple brand, which actually makes me love the iPad even more. But then again, if/when Samsung eventually get to release their tablet, consumers will perceive it to be a real competitor to the iPad. The $$$ being spent on lawyers is a small investment to get this level of media coverage.
ReplyDelete@Ross: Go an buy an iPad - you know you want to! ;)
It's probably not a bad position for Samsung to be in...other than they can't sell their product! With Apple going to great lengths to stop the release of this tablet they are saying pretty strongly that they are threatened and see this devise as a serious competitor to the iPad. So when they can finally get a product on the market it will be the tablet that Apple tried to stop.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the fact that publicity for Samsung here is great. @Amity, good point, the tablet that apple tried to stop. Great idea of a campaign, but being apple, Samsung would need to be careful not to use any direct mention of this, but if they can come up with a clever way of saying it, I reckon it would work well.
ReplyDelete@Wags, I know you love your iPad, so sorry for getting angry at it in my previous post, but I say bring on the Galaxy tab! Now that you have your "who are we" android phone, I'm sure once this Galaxy tab comes out you will look at your iPad and suffer post purchase dissonance, but I will offer my moral support if this occurs.

@Ross: You know you want one! :)
ReplyDeleteI knew you were going to say that @Wags. Kate what is your take, lets say the Galaxy doesn't come out, will you get an iPad?
ReplyDeleteWell work has supplied us with the Samsung Galaxy's and we were meant to be getting the tablets to match. From a business perspective, using an iPad with a Samsumg phone wouldn't be the most ideal... so this whole scandal really has been a complete inconvenience for us. Telstra were not helpful at all in providing us with Apple product options and as a result, talked us into Samsung handsets... and now we are all left with nothing.
ReplyDeleteAt the time, I did feel it was a bad business decision not going with Apple but maybe that is because I am a huge Apple advocate.. nevertheless I do love the Samsung handset and think it certainly competes very closely with the iPhone. At the moment, I just want either product - as all of our jobs are being effected by not having anything to use in the interim!
